Explore the use of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue to depolarize difficult conversations, mediate conflict, and facilitate social healing

In the wake of the pandemic, racial unrest, and political polarization in our society, the engagement of supportive structured dialogue groups has become an increasingly appealing option for the many people who yearn to promote social healing but are at a loss with regard to the means by which to do so.

This webinar is one effort to provide the means and resources to promote social healing through the time-tested one-on-one approach of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue, which incorporates elements of the group process developed by the increasingly popular and reputable organization Braver Angels. Through the use of a demonstration to illustrate the approach as well as dyad work with the audience, this webinar will provide the introductory means for participants to learn the principles, format, and application of the approach in their communities, households, and professions.

In this webinar, Kirk Schneider will illustrate the “Experiential Democracy Dialogue,” which is a conflict mediation model that draws from over a decade of experience facilitating the Dialogue combined with Kirk's experience as a trained moderator for the national organization “Braver Angels.” Braver Angels is a citizens group that offers supportive structured dialogues to self-identified liberals and conservatives to learn about and understand each other with the prospect for achieving common ground.

The webinar will offer a range of timely topics for participants to engage in a dialogue; introduce and provide the context for the Experiential Democracy Dialogue; offer a demonstration of its six-phase approach with two volunteers from Braver Angels, and invite the audience to form dyads to practice the skills comprising the approach.  Ample time will be provided for audience discussion following the dyad groups. The webinar will also draw from Kirk's new book on this topic—The Depolarizing of America:  A Guidebook for Social Healing, which audience members will be encouraged to read to optimize their application of the Experiential Democracy Dialogue.

This webinar will provide the introductory means for participants to learn the principles, format, and application of the approach in their communities, households, and professions.

During the webinar Kirk will:

Offer a demonstration of its six-phase approach with two volunteers from the Braver Angels Network, a liberal and conservative (both self-identified) discussing a timely topic;

We will invite the audience to form dyads to practice the skills comprising the approach;

The apparently powerful results of this encounter can be used to promote similar dialogues both in communities and governments.

FAQ

How do I get my Zoom link? There is not a link that says Zoom. You will join the workshop from the Event page. What you are looking for is the "Access Online Event" button in either the Registration Confirmation email or in the Reminder email- that is your individual access to the Event page. Please note that the Access Code in those emails is not a Zoom ID - it is a TicketSpice code to access the event page from the ticket page- there is no Zoom ID.

Am I required to participate in the dyads? Absolutely not. If dyads are not your jam then just let me know in Chat before the dyads.

I am getting CEs do I need to be signed in to Zoom? Yes, you will need to be signed into Zoom from start to finish to get CE documentation. Sign in to the Waiting Room early if you can. CE seekers cannot miss more than 10 min of event.

How do I get Zoom or a Zoom Account?

What if I have difficulty? We will have some tech help in the Zoom Chat on the day of the workshop. We also intend to have a recording for later viewing.

Can I join the dyads on Saturday just by being there? Can you add me to a dyad if I am not signed in to a Zoom Account? You will need to be signed in to a Zoom account to be seen by our moderator in her dashboard. We cannot add you manually.

I cannot seem to register, is there a tip? You do need to select the number of tickets you would like to buy and then you need to initial for the waiver. Both of those need to be completed before putting in your name, email and payment info.
